Nine years after launching its “FlowerbyKenzo” perfume with its iconic poppy, Kenzo has introduced “FlowerbyKenzo essentielle”. Designed by Serge Mansau, its slender bottle is stretched almost to breaking-point, further defying gravity; the material becomes delicate and transparent.
The outstanding clarity of DuPont™ Surlyn® was the principal reason behind Auriplast’s decision to select this resin for the cap of “FlowerbyKenzo essentielle”. “The challenge was to produce a component that would be both solid and slender (up to 4.17’’ (106 mm) high) using one-step moulding, while creating the curved shape in a post-molding process,” explains Stéphane Bruhat, project leader at Qualipac Auriplast. “We chose Surlyn® PC2000 because it combines the best performance in terms of transparency with essential thickness.”

DuPont Cosmetic Solutions at Luxepack 2009:New dimensions in design and options for sustainable innovation in luxury packaging

Geneva, October 2009. LuxePack 2009 (Monaco, 21-23 October 2009) marks 25 years of innovation in cosmetic and perfume packaging that have benefited from the aesthetic freedom and functional performance of DuPont™ Surlyn® and other polymers designed to meet perfectly the packaging needs of brand owners and designers.
DuPont series of innovations for the cosmetic and personal care markets will be presented in Hall Ravel, stand D. Highlights are to include the company’s new Surlyn® 3D overmoulding technology, the introduction of high-performance renewably-sourced DuPont™ Biomax® PTT polyester for cosmetic and personal care applications and the celebration of 25 years of Surlyn® as the material of choice for closures and caps, cream jars and bottles for almost all leading perfume and cosmetic brands. Finally, Jonathan Cohen, global business director at DuPont Cosmetic Solutions, will contribute to the show’s conference program with a presentation how to “Reconcile Luxury Packaging and the Environment” on Friday, October 23 at 3:15 p.m.

New Surlyn® 3D Overmoulding Technology to go beyond glass
DuPont’s new Surlyn® 3D overmoulding technology represents a significant step towards its objective of going beyond glass, combining enhanced design freedom and greater decoration possibilities with greater consumer safety and convenience with “on-the-go” products. It involves the encasing, or over-moulding, of an inner container with Surlyn® resins using a unique patented process. Several layers and different resins or materials can be used for the inner container depending on the appropriate level of barrier properties and desired decorative effects.

“The multitude of design options made possible by this development is very exciting,” comments Arnaud Mastain, cosmetic market development manager. “Intricate shapes and decorative effects, ranging from crystal transparency, coloured translucency or frosted effects are easily produced using Surlyn® 3D overmoulding. And now, because glass has been entirely eliminated from the bottle’s design, it is safer, more robust, lighter, easier to produce as well as reconciling the “on-the-go” trend to the luxury transparency effect.

DuPont™ Biomax® PTT 1100 for sustainable Luxury Packaging
DuPont™ Biomax® PTT 1100 (PolyTrimethylTerephthalate) is a non-reinforced polyester-type resin with a renewably-sourced content. It is intended for use in high-performance cosmetic and personal care packaging with a lower environmental footprint. Its attributes include a glossy surface for attractive aesthetics, excellent resistance to common personal care and cosmetic formulations, a naturally opaque to translucent appearance, good colorability, high scratch resistance and excellent environmental stress cracking resistance. Such attributes can create the potential for additional cost-savings during production.
Most recent testing conducted by DuPont under the PETCore Bottle-to-Bottle protocol has confirmed the compatibility of renewably-sourced DuPont™ Biomax® PTT 1100 with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in recycle streams. This means that the injection-moldable resin, which is especially suitable for use in cosmetic packaging applications including compact cases, cream jars and thin-walled perfume caps, can be successfully mixed with the established PET bottle recycling stream.

25 Years of Surlyn® in Cosmetics
First used for perfume caps in the mid-80s, the growing range of stunning designs in glass-like quality for the caps, closures, jars and bottles of the leading brands from the world of fragrances and cosmetics, including Calvin Klein, Kenzo, Givenchy, Christian Dior and L’Oreal, bears testament to the growing familiarity of designers and moulders with the almost limitless design possibilities of the DuPont polymer which offers excellent clarity, functional performance, appealing surfaces, a luxurious feel and ease of production.

Importantly, the polymer is thoroughly resistant to the ingredients of the fragrance and does not alter the nature of the scent. Closures moulded from Surlyn® would neither break nor crack, nor allow any emanation of the fragrance. Over the course of the last 25 years, DuPont has extended and enhanced its range of Surlyn® grades to reflect its adoption as a material of choice for perfume and cosmetic packaging. New grades have seen improvements made in humidity barrier performance, special grades for colour effects and improved melt flow characteristics. Surlyn® PC2000, a grade launched at the start of the 21st century, is highly suitable for injection moulding, providing enhanced processability over other grades. It is ideal for applications where easy melt flow characteristics and high stiffness, high clarity and good abrasion resistance are desired.
The Surlyn® history continues its journey… with other innovations to be showcased at Luxe Pack.
